How to Check Your Stored RV for Damage After Winter

With spring quickly approaching, many BC RVers are beginning to pull their old rigs out of winter storage and dust them off for a brand-new season of adventures. Unfortunately, many RV owners don’t realize how much potential damage might have taken place while sitting still all winter – especially if you neglected to have it properly winterized beforehand. Thankfully, to help make sure you have a smooth start to your season, the team here at O’Connor RV has put together some helpful tips for inspecting your stored RV for damage.

Inspect Your RV’s Tires

When it comes to your RV’s tires, the first thing you want to have checked is the tire pressure. A pro tip is to check the tire manufacturer’s published load and inflation tables for the recommended tire pressure and adjust it accordingly. You’ll also want to check the conditions of your tire’s sidewalls and tread depth just in case it may be time for some new tires.

Inspect Your RV’s Exterior

Start by inspecting the roof for any cracks or separation and seal with lap sealant if needed. While an RV service centre like O’Connor RV’s can de-winterize your RV and do this for you, if you decide to DIY, it’s important that you use a sealant compatible with the material of your RV’s roof. RV roof materials can range from fibreglass, metal, EPDM, TPO and ALFA. Also, check your RV’s window and door seals as well as front and rear corner seals and reseal them with a sealant if needed.

Inspect Your RV’s Interior

Checking your RV’s interior includes ensuring your turn signals, breakaway switch, and brake lights are functioning properly. You should also look to make sure all of your equipment and appliances are secure. Motorized units should have all fluids checked, and if you have a generator, check the oil and start it up. After it’s been running for a few minutes to warm up, put it under a 50% load for a minimum of 20 minutes. Additionally, all towable units should have the bearings repacked yearly and the breaks checked for function.

The best way to have a hassle-free season is to stay on top of your maintenance. Test all systems before each outing. Use a checklist to make sure you keep everything in top working order. Keep in mind that these tips are just a general guide to keeping your RV ready to go for years to come. Every RV is different, so follow the advice of your trusted dealership or mobile technician.
